Opening a PSX account: CDC, brokerage and NCCPL basics

The three institutions behind every trade, what you actually open, and how to start without the usual beginner mistakes.

Every share you buy on PSX sits inside a small piece of national plumbing with three main institutions. Understanding them takes ten minutes and removes most of the mystery (and fear) from starting.

The three institutions

PSX (Pakistan Stock Exchange) is the marketplace: the matching engine where buy and sell orders meet, and the publisher of prices, indices and company announcements. CDC (Central Depository Company) is the vault: Pakistan's shares are electronic, not paper, and the CDC holds them in accounts in investors' names — when you “own” a share, a CDC record says so. NCCPL (National Clearing Company of Pakistan) is the settlement engine: it stands between buyers and sellers, calculates who owes what, and arranges the exchange of money and shares after each trade (settlement in Pakistan is on a T+2 cycle — the trade completes two working days after it is struck).

What you actually open

You do not open an account at PSX itself. You open two linked accounts through a licensed securities broker (a PSX TRE certificate holder): a trading account with the broker, through which orders are placed, and a CDC sub-account in your own name, where your shares are held. Holding shares in your own CDC sub-account matters: the shares are yours even if the broker fails. Brokers offer online account opening; you will need standard identity documentation (CNIC and proof of income/source of funds are routinely asked for under Pakistan's AML rules), a bank account in your own name for transfers, and — for the Roshan Digital Account route used by overseas Pakistanis — the SBP's RDA channel instead.

Choosing a broker

Compare on things that outlast any single trade: whether the broker is a licensed TRE holder in good standing (checkable on PSX/CDC listings), the quality and reliability of its trading app, whether research like the pages on this site is provided, and total costs — commissions and CDC/custody charges vary, so ask for the full tariff in writing rather than a headline rate. Avoid any “broker” who contacts you through social media promising guaranteed returns, and never hand money to an individual's personal bank account: payments should go to the brokerage's designated client account only.

Your first weeks

Fund a small amount you can afford to learn with. Place a small order in a liquid, well-known name and watch the full cycle — order, execution, the trade appearing in your CDC sub-account, settlement at T+2. Read every contract note. Learn where the announcements feed is before you need it, and set up the habit this site is built around: market first (overview), shortlist second (screener), filings always (announcements). The market will still be there when you are ready to be serious — it rewards the prepared far more reliably than the hurried.
