Thursday 5 Nov: who moved the index

SectorIndex points
Commercial Banks+1,296.92
Cement+625.60

Technology, Oil & Gas Exploration and Power Generation were also named among Thursday's leading sectors in market reports. Banks contributed close to 39% of the day's 3,366-point gain — with roughly 29% of the index's weight, the banking sector is the KSE-100's centre of gravity: when bank earnings and dividends go well, the index usually follows.

What local research actually covers

Coverage is concentrated where the money is. Darson Securities' monthly programme, for example, runs dedicated updates on just three sectors — Automobiles, Cement and Fertilizer — alongside result previews for banks (UBL, HBL, MCB and peers), fertiliser names such as EFERT and FFC, and cement companies including DGKC, PIOC and FCCL. Its wider coverage list spans 50+ companies and over 70% of market capitalisation, but the lesson generalises: a handful of sectors get deep, continuous research; the other thirty-odd sectors of the 38 on PSX get very little. Investors in uncovered sectors are largely on their own — which is precisely why screening data matters there.
